While fiber lasers are widely used for metal welding and cutting, there are some applications in which they still deliver less than ideal results. Welding of zinc coated steel and aluminum are two important examples. This article presents a new embodiment of fiber laser technology from Coherent, the Adjustable Ring Mode fiber laser (FL-ARM), which overcomes the prior limitations of fiber lasers in these applications. In particular, it enables zero-gap lap welding zinc coated steel and spatter free aluminum welding. This whitepaper explores the basic operating principles of the FL-ARM, and reviews applications results which prove its advantages when welding zinc coated steel and aluminum.
