Dukane acquires laser welding contractor Blackhawk

June 24, 2019
The addition will broaden Dukane's plastic welding solutions for a wide range of applications.

Plastic welding specialist Dukane (St. Charles, IL) has acquired Blackhawk Technology Group (Aumsville, OR), a systems, services, and contract manufacturer for laser plastic welding. The addition will strengthen Dukane's knowledge of complex laser welding, broaden its plastic welding solutions for a wide range of applications, and add additional capacity for laser plastic welding projects.

Blackhawk focuses on end-to-end service, from basic material tests to full process development and contract manufacturing. The company has expertise in electronics, automotive, and medical, with solutions for insulin delivery devices, smart inhalers, and hearing aids.

Dukane offers the ability to weld clear-to-clear (2 µm) components without the need for additives, which has grown the demand for its laser technology, explains Mike Johnston, Dukane's president and CEO. "In addition, because of our global support and advanced LaserlinQ technology, customers are requesting laser technology for 1 µm opaque-to-colored weld applications. This increasing demand makes acquiring Blackhawk a perfect fit for Dukane," he says.

Dax Hamilton, Blackhawk's founder and managing director, will join Dukane as director and global product manager  laser plastic welding. Josh Brown, current director of sales for Blackhawk, will join Dukane as global sales manager laser plastic welding. Now, Dukane will continue to invest in laser plastic welding and further strengthen its solutions portfolio and support the growth and capabilities of the team.

Dukane will utilize Blackhawk’s facility to offer its other technologies, including their servo-controlled ultrasonic welding system with Melt-Match technology. The addition of the facility in Aumsville will give Dukane an advanced testing facility in the Western U.S.
