Part verification, mark content, and laser control are accomplished through integrated software. The company says the one-time job setup can be transferred to other FOBA lasers to offer machine-to-machine consistency. Reportedly, typical changeover time also can be reduced by 40 percent or better when compared to laser systems without IMP.
Field replacement optics

It offers the ability to perform precision cutting, routing, skiving, drilling, cutting pockets, structuring of etch/solder resist, micromachining of ceramic substrates, and more.
In addition to the certified plastic window P2008 for CO2 lasers, Laservision GmbH (Furth, Germany; www.lvg.com) has developed a second plastic window P2009 certified with L protection levels according to EN 207 for Nd:YAG laser applications. Marked with L protection levels D L5 and IR L6 at 1064nm can be used for laser marking and engraving applications, but also for other Nd:YAG applications with lower output power. Thickness is specified at 3mm and the visible light transmission is approximately 65 percent. Standard dimensions are 100 x 200 mm2, DIN A4, 300 x 450 mm2, 450 x 600 mm2, 610 x 915 mm2, and 915 x 1220 mm2.
Laser sintering systems

The unit offers a build envelope of 8 x 10 x 13 inches and is housed in a 52 x 42 x 77 inch cabinet. Reportedly, with advancements in optics and laser control it can produce walls as thin as 0.016 inch. The system also features a newly designed radial recoater system that improves part quality while decreasing powder consumption, which lowers operating expense. Parts can be built at a rate that approaches one inch per hour.
Lasit’s (Branford, CT; www.LasitUSA.com) CompactMark is an industrial laser marking system with a range of features offering versatility and capability. The fully enclosed rigid welded steel Class One system is well suited for marking metals, plastics, and many organic materials and is fully air cooled. The XYZ control is optimized through the use of a smooth joystick. The system boasts a 19- x 15-inch pallet that provides optimal throughput when marking multiple parts. It is offered with a range of lasers, including the 20W FiberFly, FlyAir 10W Vanadate, Fly 50 or 70 watts, 10-30W CO2, and green.
Edge-blackened optics from Edmund Optics (Barrington, NJ; www.edmundoptics.com) are designed to increase contrast and reduce noise in imaging and electro-optical systems The blackened edges prevent light from exiting a mounted optic, reflecting off the metal fixturing and being re-imaged through the optical assembly. According to the company, offering the edge blackening as a standard option eliminates a labor-intensive step in integrating the optics into OEM assemblies.
As opposed to analog drilling heads of conventional servo technology, the settling time of the digitally controlled intelliDRILL 20 series, from Scanlab AG (Puchheim, Germany; www.scanlab.de), will not keep rising linearly with the increasing pitches, but turns into a square-root-function by the digital servo control algorithms. This results in a product that is capable of 2 kHz precise positioning over short pitches (1 mm). Typically, positioning of 10mm stroke can be minimized down to 1.5 ms within a settling accuracy bandwidth of +/-3 μm (defined at approximately f = 100 mm focal distance). Other smart functionalities include remote diagnosis saving maintenance costs, real-time monitoring of detailed operational states, and integration of multiple tunings in one system.

A compact dust collector from Micro Air Clean Air Systems (Wichita, KS; www.microaironline.com), the Model RP-1 Twister features 1000 CFM performance and cartridge collection with a cyclonic drop-out design, 99.999 percent efficient fire retardant cartridge filter, and 72 dBA operation. The unit measures 18.5 inches in diameter and 63.5 inches in height and features the company’s Roto-Pulse cartridge cleaning system, which cleans 100 percent of the cartridge area. Options include 100 percent spunbound polyester washable filter and wall-mount kit.
The Limo(Dortmund, Germany; www.limo.de) Limo25-F200-ADL9xx and Limo32-F400-ADL9xx diode modules operate without any thermoelectric or water cooling, which results in a compact and cost-effective diode laser system that requires only a fan to provide the necessary cooling. The output power of the two fiber-coupled devices are 25 watts and 32 watts, respectively, and they operate with a maximum pulse duration of 10 minutes. They can be used in the welding of plastics and soldering.
Kentek’s(Pittsfield, NH; www.kentek-laser.com) Entry-Guard Safety Interlock System (SIS) offers a way to control access to laser emission areas. Each system is customized by integrating components to create a system appropriate for the user’s environment and application. Components include illuminated signs, lights, audible signals, interlocks, magnetic locks/latches, keypads, start/exit switches, emergency stop switches, laser shutters, and enclosures.
Cryogenic gas manifold
Designed for use with CONCOA’s (Virginia Beach, VA; www.concoa.com) IntelliSwitch Series switchover and 623 delivery systems, the 630 Series manifold together with the 629 vent kit enable integrating an adjustable auxiliary pressure-building circuit that can push liquid through the manifold faster than the cylinder’s internal pressure building coil. Extending the flow range of common liquid cylinders up to four times the rated gaseous withdrawal capacity, the vented manifold is an ideal solution for laser.
The Fantom Series, OEM CO2 laser marking and engraving kit from Laser Photonics (Lake Mary, FL; www.laserphotonics.com) comes in 10, 30, and 100 watts. All models are based on folded wave guide laser resonators, DSP controllers, and direct imaging and scanning technologies. A shielding gas to the scanner prevents external dust particles from contaminating the lens and mirrors. Each system is delivered with graphical based marking and engraving software and text based architecture, which allows for multiple file conversion capabilities. Typical applications include: IC chip marking, UID - Unique Identifier, barcoding, 2D data matrix codes, lot codes, date codes, surface annealing, surface etching, ablation, surface marking, OCR code marking, surface texturing, 2D symbologies linear barcodes, marking “on the fly,” and production inline integration.

It is available with all of the company’s standard mineral glass filters, regular ones as well as coated ones. Protector can also be equipped with custom-designed filters to cover more seldom and specific applications. Two different frame versions are available: the regular model L-08 and the extra enforced model L-08K that provides exceptionally high laser resistance. Vents prevent the goggles from fogging up under regular conditions. For work under more humid conditions the product can also be equipped with an extra anti-fogging insert-a plastic sheet coated with nanoparticles that absorb humidity.
Multimode fiber power combiners
Comcore Technologies’ (Fremont, CA; www.comcore.com) multimode fiber high-power combiners can couple 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 multimode fiber inputs into a single multimode output. These fiber combiners can be useful components when coupling power from several multimode laser diodes to create a single, high-power output source. This source can be used directly for high-power diode laser applications in materials processing. Alternatively, the output can be used to pump fiber lasers for applications in industrial, medical, and military markets, or to pump optical amplifiers and fiber lasers.

Diode laser system
New from DILAS(Mainz, Germany; www.dilas.com), the Line Focus Diode Laser System (LFx40) supports a variety of applications such as simultaneous or mask welding of plastics and annealing and re-crystallization of surface processes. The system features a power supply with an integrated micro-controller and chiller. The unit delivers 400W output power at wavelengths from 800 nm to 980 nm with a line focus beam profile of approximately 100mm length.
Liekki (Lohja, Finland; www.liekki.com) 20/125 line of products for fiber lasers and amplifiers supports a 20-micron core and 125-micron cladding geometry. According to the company, the highly doped ytterbium fiber with its high pump absorption, high power conversion efficiency, polarization preservation, and large mode area provides excellent amplification of pulses with durations ranging from nanoseconds to femtoseconds. High-power pulses are typically used in materials processing and micromachining. The fiber is available as polarization maintaining and non-polarization maintaining fiber. The company also has announced Liekki Application Designer v3.3. New features include an enhanced Monte Carlo analysis, an improved calculation algorithm that reduces the calculation time, the ability to control modes independently when simulating an active fiber in multimode regime, and an enhanced user interface and documentation.
UV laser micromachining
A range of diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers based on proprietary technology from Midaz Lasers (London; www.midaz.co.uk) offer a combination of increased efficiency and ultra-compact size, which enables the company to frequency-triple its IR lasers into high-power, high-pulse repetition rate compact DPSS UV lasers. According to the company, the almost perfect beam quality with output power up to 25 watts and pulse rep rate to beyond 1 MHz make these UV lasers ideal for micromachining of silicon and various semiconductor processing applications.
Built on the ChromaDice diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser platform, the Class 1-enclosed laser scribing systems from JP Sercel Associates (Manchester, NH; www.jpsalaser.com) are designed for the isolation and series interconnection of thin-film solar cells. They employ high peak power, short-pulse DPSS laser sources to remove a variety of thin films from large glass, metal, or polymer substrates. A number of wavelengths suitable for different layer materials are available, including 1064 nm, 532 nm, 355 nm, and 266 nm. The company says the systems use advanced laser technology scribing to rapidly and accurately produce fine scribed lines with >30MO-hm isolation.
Hard-cover linear stage
The ATS115 is Aerotech’s (Pittsburgh, PA; www.aerotech.com) smallest hard cover, side-sealed stage design. The aluminum hard cover is hard-coated for scratch resistance. The side seals keep dirt and particulates out of the stage, protecting the bearing surfaces from contamination and significantly increase stage bearing life. The product uses a NEMA 23 flange-mounting interface for attachment of a wide variety of Aerotech and third-party motors. The company can provide brush, brushless, and stepper motors pre-configured and mounted directly to the stage for integration with its controls. The base mounting holes are accessible from the outside of the stage for ease of integration.
The new Thermo Scientific (Newington, NH; www.thermo.com) ThermoFlex 900 and 1400 recirculating chillers deliver up to 900 and 1400 watts, respectively, of continuous cooling capacity. Reportedly, efficiencies provide up to 20 percent more cooling than units of similar size and power. The units can maintain temperatures from 5ºC to 40ºC. An integrated ramp enables a single person to unpack and install a unit, while a quick-start guide walks the user through the start-up process. Each chiller incorporates a patented recirculation system with an integrated funnel, full flow filtration, and visual fluid level indication. The air and fluid filters on these units can be changed during unit operation.
