Heavy Metal Pipe Cutting for Oil Wells

This white paper discusses laser cutting used to create the filtering slots in oil well liners. These long steel pipes (up to 12 meters) have a 10 mm wall thickness.

The application requires up to 10,000 through slots cut in each pipe section often with custom (keystone) side wall profile. CO2 lasers have long proved very successful in this application, but fiber lasers are now poised to also enter this high-throughput steel cutting application.
