North American plastics maker contracts WLSC for laser cutting systems

Worldwide Laser (WLSC; Gilbert, AZ) has been awarded a contract for a series of six laser cutting systems designed to cut plastics for a major North American plastics manufacturer. The LP series of lasers have utility in cutting plastics in the CO2, UV, and 532 nm laser wavelengths.
The company's system engineerings can combine the lasers with a wide range of integration options, such as x-y tables, rotary turn tables, linear assembly lines, robots, articulated arms, and vacuum pick-and-place, for example. Laser cutting plastic is critical for many industrial applications, including medical, aerospace, packaging, and automotive.

In the packaging industry, the cutting lasers are used to create windows and score lines (for ease of opening), and also for trimming the edges of products and trimming the excess material off rolls of packaging. In the automotive industry, one of the primary uses of laser trimming systems is degating of injection-molded parts.
There are many other applications for laser cutting and laser trimming systems to reduce costs, and eliminate scrap and product damage.
