Applications for the VersaScribe VL series from Alase Technologies (Pepperell, MA) range from medical device and metal marking to product coding and identification. According to the manufacturer, the system delivers a throughput rate from 20 to 50 percent faster than traditional lasers. For fine surface engraving and annealing, the laser heat treats the surface of the material to create a black contrast. Reportedly, the unit requires minimal preventative maintenance and entails no consumables costs. The marker is air cooled for temperature regulation and employs diode technology specifically designed for high reliability and long lifetime. The system can be used in conjunction with the company's WinLase laser marking software. Laser powers include 10, 20, and 50 watts. Field sizes range from 70 mm to 280 mm square, while spot size selection ranges from 22 mm to 60 mm.

The UM110D from Advanced Laser Solution Ltd. (UK) is a compact, dual-wavelength laser beam analyzer that can measure both CO2 lasers up to 10 kW and Nd:YAG lasers up to 4 kW. ..Developed for use as an in-process monitor, the unit gives two 1-d intensity profiles, relative raw beam center point position, and beam diameter (1/e2 or full beam) with user-programmable alarm settings. The unit weighs 1 kg and measures 200 mm diameter and 90 mm deep.

Laser resonator

New from Bystronic Inc. (Hauppauge, NY), the Bylaser with the 5200 ARC (adaptive radius control) provides consistent high output power of 5200 watts. ARC provides automatic optimization of the beam diameter for all sheet metal thicknesses and materials. Operation and diagnostics use Laserview via a touch screen on the operating terminal. Appropriate materials include steel up to 25 mm, stainless steel up to 20 mm, and aluminum up to 12 mm.

Linear bearing carriages

Schneeberger Inc. (Bedford, MA) has added the BME, BMF, and BMG carriage types to its line of Ball Monorail-Monorail BM-Precision linear guides. Carriage BME is available in three sizes—25, 30, and 35—with dimensions ranging from 40 to 55 mm in height, 57 to 76 mm in width, and 90 to 118 mm in length. Carriages BMF and BMG are available in sizes 15, 25, 30, and 35 and offer more compact dimensions—up to 14 percent reduced overall height compared with industry standards, according to the company. The reduced heights of the carriages enable lower profile stages with less mass. Both carriages have heights ranging from 24 to 48 mm and widths from 34 to 70 mm. BMF offers lengths of 60 to 118 mm and BMG is available in 60 to 144 mm.

The TC L 2510 XL FMC from TRUMPF Inc. (Farmington, CT) combines a load and unload device with a high-speed laser cutting machine. The rapid in-line ..load and unload device takes care of all material-handling tasks and eliminates the need for a traditional pallet changer. The machine achieves optimal results in thin-gauge material up to one-half-inch thick carbon steel. The flying optic design achieves high processing speeds and consistent accuracy independent of material weight. Optimal cut consistency is assured by integral mounting of the laser resonator to the machine frame.

Coated lead screws

Lead screw, linear rail, spline shaft, and ScrewRail actuator assemblies are available with Kerkote TFE coating from Kerk Motion Products (Hollis, NH). According to the company, the coating is more evenly distributed than other lubricants, decreasing erratic drag torques and unpredictable wear. It provides the maximum level of self-lubrication, and, because it is a dry lubricant, it will not become dry and paste-like and will not attract dirt or debris.

Laser retrofit package

A variety of retrofit packages include Hypertherm Inc.'s (Hanover, NH) FAST Laser cutting heads and Mariner controller coupled with Rofin-Sinar's DC slab and RF laser series resonators. The LH2100 laser cutting head offers 10.0 inches. The LH2125 adds a 12.5-inch focal length option for thicker plate. The Rofin-Sinar DC slab design features 2.0-, 2.5-, and 3.5-kW models for high-speed sheet metal cutting and thick-plate processing. The RF resonator design provides 5.0kW of cutting power for thick-plate processing.

A multi-page data sheet from Spectra-Physics (Mountain View, CA) details the HIPPO (high-intensity peak power ..oscillator) family of all solid-state lasers and their ultraviolet harmonic modules. The literature describes all the features and benefits of these short-pulse lasers, provides detailed engineering drawings to facilitate OEM integration, and includes a full list of laser specifications. The high peak power enables efficient harmonic conversion to green (532 nm) and ultraviolet (355 or 266 nm) wavelengths through the use of pre-aligned modules that bolt directly on to the front of the compact laser head.

Compressed air dryer

The AD Series membrane air dryer from Parker Hannifin Corp. (Tewksbury, MA) provides pure, dry compressed air and offers an efficient alternative to desiccant and refrigerant dryer technologies. The new configuration includes an extra stage of prefiltration. The product will dry compressed air to dewpoints of -40 degrees F at flow rates from <1 SCFH to 40 SCFM.

Nitrogen gas generator

The Nitrogen Generator from Parker Hannifin Corp. (Tewksbury, MA) produces up to 150 SCFH of compressed nitrogen on site at purities up to 99.5 percent and 872 SCFH at 95 percent purity. The system utilizes proprietary membrane separation technology. The membrane divides the compressed air feed gas into two systems: one is 95 to 99.5 percent pure nitrogen and the other is oxygen-rich with carbon dioxide and other trace gases. Standard features include high-efficiency coalescing prefilters with automatic drains, and activated carbon filter, and a 0.01-micron membrane final filter.

Recirculating chiller

The PolyScience (Niles, IL) line of recirculating chillers incorporates several new features, including a digital pressure/flow rate display and user-selectable temperature, pressure, and flow rate alarms. The chillers maintain process temperatures from -10° C to +70° C with plus or minus 0.1 degree C stability and are available with 1/4 to 1 HP compressors. Each chiller can be equipped with the pump type (centrifugal, positive displacement, or turbine) that is best suited for the cooling application.

Smart head

Model L250W from Ophir Optronics Inc. (Wilmington, MA) is a thin profile (20mm thick) thermal surface absorber head for continuous wave and long pulse lasers. The water-cooled smart head is designed for laser measurements in tight tolerances. The head is 90mm × 90mm × 20mm thick. It can measure powers from 4 W to 250 W and energies from 200 mJ to 200 J. The product offers a power measurement accuracy of plus or minus 3 percent with a "linearity with power" specification of plus or minus 2 percent.

TEC diode laser modules

The new thermo-electrically cooled (TEC) diode laser modules from Photonic Products Ltd. (UK) produce elliptical output beams and output powers of 8mW at 375 nm ultraviolet, 40mW at 980 nm, and 110mW at 808 nm in the infrared wavelength. The modules incorporate microprocessor-based temperature control and laser driver electronics, thermo-electric cooler, heatsink and fan that enable the diode laser temperature to be controlled to a set point temperature between +18° C to +25° C, and with a stability of plus or minus 0.05° C.

The 300W and 150W air-cooled CO2 lasers from BFi OPTiLAS (Evry, France) and Universal Laser Systems Inc. have ..built-in RF supplies, integrated cooling, and provide good beam quality in both the near and far fields. A water-cooled option is also available.

Tube laser

New from Mazak Nissho Iwai (Schaumburg, IL), the FabriGear-150 3D tube laser automatically loads, feeds, laser cuts, and unloads tube, pipe, and structural materials with up to a 5.9-inch diameter. The system fabricates round, square, rectangular, and triangular pipe as well as I and H beams, C channel, and angle iron. The 64-bit NC and simultaneously controlled 3D cutting head enable the 3D rotary system to perform coping in one operation. It also cuts precise angles, weld-prep bevels, and complex contours.

Cross-flow resonator

The 4kW laser 40CFX from Mitsubishi (Wood Dale, IL) is a high-power, high-efficiency resonator which cuts up to one-inch mild steel, 1/2-inch aluminum, and 3/4-inch stainless steel. The product offers a 5Hz control feature for high-detail cutting, a polarization reflection absorbing mirror and high-speed power sensor for safe processing of reflective materials, and rectangular pulse output that is ideal for low heat processing. It uses the company's patented rectangular-wave peak power. The wave pattern extends peak power during cutting and is designed to result in higher power and cleaner edge quality.

Laser alignment system

The 2.25 Microgage Laser System from Pinpoint Laser Systems (Newburyport, MA) is a laser transmitter and receiver system that adapts to traditional optical alignment devices. The battery-operated, 2.25-inch laser fits into standard optical hardware mounts, replacing the visual telescope, and the Microgage receiver is used in place of the scribed ruler. According to the company, precision measurements with a sensitivity of 0.0001 inch can be made over distances of from 12 inches to 80 feet.
