Industrial Laser Solutions announces that Timothy W. Simpson is now a member of the publication's International Editorial Advisory Board. Simpson, who is one of the leading experts in additive manufacturing, will strengthen the publication's perspective on that technology. He holds doctoral and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech (Atlanta, GA) and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University (Ithaca, NY).

At Penn State University (State College, PA), where he has been a faculty member since 1998, he is the Paul Morrow Professor in Engineering Design and Manufacturing. He is co-director of the Penn State Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D), and he helped launch and oversees the Additive Manufacturing and Design Graduate Program at Penn State, the first-of-its-kind online and resident degree program in the world. He is nationally recognized for his work in 3D printing.

Simpson is an ASME Fellow, Penn State’s Teaching and Learning with Technology Fellow in 3D Printing, and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has spoken at numerous industry events and conferences on additive manufacturing and design, and his work has been widely published in both scholarly journals and mainstream media.

He helped launch and coordinate the ASME Additive Manufacturing & 3D Printing Conference & Expo and was part of the team that founded the ASME Innovative Additive Manufacturing & 3D Printing Design Challenge. He also served as chair of the Design Engineering Division, the largest division within ASME, and he was a founding member and chair of ASME’s Design, Materials and Manufacturing Segment Leadership Team.
