INDUSTRY/UNIVERSITY COOPERATIVE RESEARCH: NSF proposes center for mid-IR medical systems

The Mid-InfraRed Technologies for Health and the Environment (MIRTHE) Center at Princeton University (Princeton, NJ) has received a planning grant proposal from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a new industry/university cooperative research (I/UCRC) program center focused on mid-infrared medical systems (MIMeS).

The Mid-InfraRed Technologies for Health and the Environment (MIRTHE) Center at Princeton University (Princeton, NJ) has received a planning grant proposal from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a new industry/university cooperative research (I/UCRC) program center focused on mid-infrared medical systems (MIMeS). The MIMeS center would be dedicated to the development and deployment of engineered biomedical systems using mid-infrared (mid-IR) photonics.

MIRTHE will host a meeting in February 2014 to discuss the opportunity with prospective members for the new I/UCRC, which, if approved, may receive funding in the fall of 2014, just prior to the final year of NSF funding for MIRTHE. To submit an I/UCRC proposal, applicants must demonstrate a requisite number of membership commitments for the first two years of the new center. NSF has also stipulated that the proposed new center may not detract from MIRTHE's current membership, so the meeting will discuss with existing members how this proposed new Center fits into MIRTHE's sustainability plan.
