Keyence (Wood Cliff Lake, NJ; www.keyence.com) has introduced its new 3-axis MD-F3000 fiber laser marker, which delivers 30 W of power directly on the target surface, ensuring that dense, hard metals can be permanently marked and etched in a matter of milliseconds. The ultra-small head allows for a small footprint and for fast, easy installation in tight spaces. The MD-F’s head has a fan-less design and is completely sealed from dirt and dust, making it good for metal processing and other harsh industrial environments. This provides greater stability, reduced maintenance, increased productivity and more mounting possibilities. Together with newly developed software, the MD-F offers a combination of marking quality, speed and ease of operation to meet stringent marking requirements. The MD-F3000 Series also incorporates Keyence’s three-axis beam control system that debuted in the ML-Z9500 and MD-V9900 Series markers. The three-axis design ensures that the MD-F provides high quality, distortion-free marking across the full 300 mm x 300 mm area without the need for costly mechanisms to index the target or marking head.

Laser Research Optics (Providence, RI; www.laserresearch.net) is offering a full line of direct OEM replacement CO2 laser optics, in plain or aluminum mounts, for most popular engraving and marking lasers. Laser Research CO2 laser optics include lenses and mirrors offered plain or in aluminum mounts for users of Camtech, Emission Technologies, Epilog, Ferba, Kern, Laser Pro Engravers, LST Lasers, Pinnacle, Synrad, Trotec, Universal, Vytek, and engraving and marking lasers. These direct OEM replacement optics reduce downtime. Featuring 1/2 in. and 1 in. O.D. sizes with focal lengths from 1 to 10 in., starting at 1/2 in. increments, these laser optics provide <0.2% total absorption values and are offered with coatings to match specific phase and polarization requirements. All optics meet ISO-10110 specifications and the aluminum mounts can be supplied by Laser Research or the customer.

ALO3 brazing/welding head

Precitec (Gaggenau, Germany; www.precitec.com) is now offering a complete solution for wire-guided joining processes. The Scansonic ALO3 is a brazing/welding head with a fully integrated coaxial quality monitoring system. Seam geometry monitoring detects the profile and the position of the fillet welds on the lap joint and double-flanged seams on the butt joint. Fixture mechanisms can be optimally matched to the welding results, irrespective of any additional quality monitoring components. The welding head causes no obstruction whatsoever in the processing area and can easily travel in and out between the fixture mechanisms. Profile measurement takes place a few millimeters behind the welding spot, necessitating only a minimal overrun at the seam end. Frequent weld defects like lack of fusion, wire on the upper/lower metal surface, gaps between the metal sheets, etc., can be reliably identified and monitored. The system also recognizes open pores from 0.5 mm upwards.

Ophir-Spiricon (Logan, UT; www.ophir-spiricon.com) offers a new line of thermal laser power sensors with powers up to 400 W. These high performance, heat dissipation sensors feature an array of pins for cooling, unlike other devices that rely on flat cooling fins that consume significantly more space. As a result, they are compact laser power sensors and half the size of most devices. The modular design can be tailored for a variety of custom OEM applications as well. The new high thermal efficiency sensors also have improved detectors for better uniformity and longer lifetimes. The sensors are linear and show no drift in readings when they heat up under laser irradiation. Linearity and stability with heating is better than 1% in most cases. The devices also have very high uniformity of reading over the surface, better than ±1%, in most cases. The low-medium power thermal sensors are designed for concentrated beams and pulses with power levels from 50 mW to 150 W and apertures to 35 mm. The medium-high power sensors are designed for higher power applications up to 400 W with apertures to 50 mm.

CONCOA (Virginia Beach, VA; www.concoa.com) has introduced an advanced gas distribution and management system designed to provide high-flow gas generators, compressors, and bulk supply systems with continuous reserve supply. Built for use in the event of power loss or if the supply system provides an insufficient amount of gas, the Series 542 high-flow backup automatically activates the reserve to provide gas supply without interruption. Good for use in high-flow building or facility systems with nitrogen, air, helium, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, oxygen, or argon, Series 542 features an onboard Web server with embedded proprietary I-LINK software, enabling remote programming and monitoring. Users can program the pressures at which the backup engages and the low-reserve alarm point, as well as continually monitor pipeline pressure and reserve status. Check valves on both the generator and the reserve prevent back flow to the generator or reserve cylinder, while shut-off valves allow for isolation and disconnection of either line. Materials of construction are high-purity brass bar stock on the body, chrome-plated die cast zinc, PCTFE (3000 PSIG) on the seat, a 40-micron 316L stainless steel mesh filter, and diaphragms/pigtails of 316L stainless steel. CGA connections are brass with a check valve, the check-vale seat is PTFE or Viton®, and the enclosure is NEMA 12 powder-coated steel. The series is available with numerous inlet options including CONCOA high flow 629 Series micromanifolds and High Flow 628 manifold headers designs.

Photon Inc. (San Jose, CA; www.photon-inc.com) has released a new adapter for the LD8900 and LD8900R goniometric radiometer far-field profilers that extends the real-time measurement capability for fibers, fiber delivery systems and other divergent sources to power levels up to the kilowatt range. The adapter uses a UV-grade fused silica prism to sample the beam by front-surface reflection. It is available with most standard fiber connectors and is easily adaptable for direct interfacing of laser diodes as well. In tests performed in a customer’s laboratory, a model LD-8900 demonstrated the ability to measure a 532 nm beam of more than 700 W. Photon’s patented goniometric radiometers generate real-time far-field profiles and angular measurements of divergent sources, including full 3D analysis.

Stent cutting system with femtosecond laser

Click to EnlargeRofin (Starnberg, Germany; www.rofin.com) has released the new StarCut Tube Femto, one of the first systems to offer cold laser cutting for medical device manufacturing. Femtosecond lasers process materials faster than energy can diffuse within the atomic lattice. Therefore, no heat is transferred to the surrounding material, which eliminates any recast and burr. The StarCut Tube Femto integrates a compact laser source with field-proven high reliability and long-term stability. Manufacturing of medical devices from tube stock typically relies on laser fusion cutting with pulse widths in the µs-scale. Even with an optimum setup, this cutting process is not free from burrs and recast inside the tube. Thus, post-processing usually includes steps like broaching, chemical etching for removing of oxide layers, and electrochemical polishing for edge rounding. The nitinol material (memory shape alloy) is prone to chemical and mechanical damage during post-processing in many cases. With femtosecond lasers, post-processing is shortened to a simple ultrasound cleaning. This improves post-processing efficiency significantly, in particular with these sensitive materials.
