Fiber laser

Intended for integration into industrial equipment, the QFL series from Quantel (Les Ulis, France; www.quantel.fr) delivers high peak power pulses for applications such as marking, engraving, micromachining, and surface treatment via a flexible output fiber and collimating optics. This compact, air-cooled system reportedly produces ultra-bright, near diffraction-limited, infrared laser light and is maintenance free and user friendly. Pulse repetition rate and output power can be controlled in real time via RS-232 or external TTL signals, providing the user the flexibility to adjust the laser parameters during the process. The laser is delivered with an optical output isolator.

Galvo scanner

Suitable for applications such as quasi-simultaneous plastic welding or selective soldering as well as solar-panel processing and medical device manufacturing, the new Galvo Scanner is intended for use in combination with Dilas’ (Mainz, Germany; www.dilas.com) top beam quality diode laser systems. When used with the company’s fiber-coupled diode laser Compact Turn-Key System (25-400 W), a laser beam spot can be focused at any point within the working field. The Galvo Scanner is available with apertures of 20 mm or 30 mm in combination with 200- or 400-μm fibers and F-Theta optics keeping the beam spot focused. The beam diameter covers a 0.6mm spot size in a 105 x 105mm2 field to a 3mm spot size in a 235 x 235mm2 field.

Material handling system

New from Bystronic (Hauppauge, NH; www.bystronicusa.com), the ByTrans material handling system yields greater profits through higher machine utilization, expanded operations, and reduced labor costs. User operations can be expanded up to three shifts. Reportedly, loading and unloading takes just 60 seconds so that the system is always faster than the shortest cutting plan. The short cycle time, which is independent of the thickness of the metal sheet, ensures greater overall throughput. The system features a 15- x 10-ft inline footprint and handles all sheet thickness up to one-inch plate.

Cutting plastic

The SBM1200M system from Laser Photonics (Lake Mary, FL; www.laserphotonics.com) is capable of cutting intricate designs and large-scale industrial plastic cutting jobs with ease. Reportedly, the system is ideal for cutting plastic, acrylic, wood, stone, aluminum, stainless steel, and most other metals. It features a CO2 laser with up to 1000 watts of power. Also, because of the direct drive structure, there are no belts, rotary encoders, or gears to wear out, and forced air cooling increases the optics lifetime tenfold.

Energy sensors

Two new laser pulse energy sensors from Coherent (Santa Clara, CA; www.coherent.com) are designed for use with very high energy/peak power lasers operating at low repetition rates. The first of these EnergyMax sensors is a 50mm diameter YAG/Harmonics detector that can operate at 1064 nm, 532 nm, 355 nm, and 266 nm without the need to change diffusers or any other accessories. The second is an IR sensor with a 25mm diameter that can work throughout the 694nm to 2.1μm wavelength range without any reconfiguration. Both sensors enable pulse energy measurements from 1.5 mJ to 3 J, and are intended for repetition rates of less than 50 Hz.

Fiber-coupled modules

QPC Lasers (Sylmar, CA; www.QPClasers.com) has introduced BrightLase high-power fiber-coupled modules with up to 250 watts output. Standard wavelengths are available at 792 nm, 808 nm, 976 nm, 1470 nm, and 1532 nm with fiber core sizes of 200 μm, 400 μm, and 600 μm. Custom wavelengths are available upon request. The modules feature high brightness and optional on-chip wavelength stabilization and are designed for direct diode application as well as fiber and solid-state laser pumping.

Meller Custom Sapphire Optics, from Meller Optics (Providence, RI; www.melleroptics.com), can be fabricated as lenses, windows, domes, prisms, tubes, and rods in a wide range of sizes and as balls from 0.1 mm to ½-in diameter with 0.000025-in per ball sphericity. Highly durable, abrasion-resistant, and chemically inert, sapphire optics feature Moh 9 hardness, making them appropriate for use in harsh environments and critical applications.

Pyroelectric TRAP Joulemeter

Spectrum Detector (Lake Oswego, OR; www.spectrumdetector.com) announced a new line of spectrally flat, pyroelectric TRAP Joulemeters. This Wedge TRAP is offered in three different configurations. The product’s strongest attribute is flat spectral response from 0.2 to 20 μm, which makes it ideal for the calibration of Joulemeters and energy probes across the spectrum.

Automated hybrid system

Mitsubishi Laser’s (Wood Dale, IL; www.mitsubishi-world.com) HV machines make up the advanced hybrid series. The open table provides excellent operability and easy maintenance. The beam path is highly stable and the long z-axis stroke offers an expanded application range. On the new HVP model, the company adds a pallet changer to the HV machine, increasing operator productivity by optimizing cutting time. The pallet changer acts as a second table that can be interchanged with the machine’s primary table, decreasing downtime between cutting.

Disposable wipes

A dirty lens can significantly affect a laser’s productivity while increasing lens replacement intervals. EZ-Clean disposable wipes from Ophir Optronics Ltd. (Wilmington, MA; www.ophiropt.com) make industrial laser lens cleaning fast and simple. The wipes are small enough to carry in a pocket. They use a special pre-measured amount of quick-drying cleaning fluid that leaves no residue and proprietary non-scratch fabric in a sealed packet. One wipe can clean a lens in a matter of seconds. They replace a five-step procedure that uses ethanol, cotton swabs, and lens paper. A package comes with 24 ready-to-use wipes.

Drilling/micromachining laser

The new Avia 355-7 from Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA; www.Coherent.com) is a Q-switched, frequency-tripled, solid-state laser delivering more than 7 W of average power at 355 nm. The highest average power is achieved at repetition rates near 60 kHz, but the laser can be operated at pulse rates as high as 100 kHz, enabling high-throughput micromachining processes. Pulse width is less than 30 ns to minimize peripheral thermal effects in these applications. According to the company, the laser delivers superior beam quality and high pulse-to-pulse stability.

Low absorption lens

According to II-VI Infrared (Pittsburgh, PA; www.iivinfrared.com), its improved MP-5 ultra-low absorption CO2 laser lens offers the absolute lowest absorption of any CO2 laser lens available in the world. The patented coating design, with a typical absorption of <0.10%, enables lower thermal distortion, visible transmission for reduced set-up time, and easy detection of thermally induced stress.
