New from Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA), Libra is a versatile, one-box regenerative amplifier designed for ultrafast materials processing and scientific applications. Libra delivers 1 W of 800nm output at repetition rates of 1 or 5 kHz. It also can pump multiple optical parametric amplifiers, providing wavelength tunability from deep UV to mid-IR. The product's integrated design incorporates the Vitesse as a seed laser and the Evolution-15 as its pump laser. The laser head measures 44 × 24 × 9.5 inches. According to the manufacturer, the product combines a simple user interface and hands-off operation with high-quality output and the convenience of a compact, one-box package to enable users to focus on manufacturing rather than on the laser itself.

Anti-backlash lead screws

The NTB series anti-backlash lead screw assemblies from Kerk Motion Products (Hollis, NH) are designed for high load applications. Using the company's patented take up mechanism, the new series maintains axial stiffness while system torque is held to a minimum, providing smooth operation and long life throughout its load and speed range. The nut is manufactured with a self-lubricating polyacetal designed to run efficiently on the company's precision rolled shafting. The screws are 303 stainless steel and are available with a long-life TFE coating.

Photodiode

A true surface-mountable packaged photodiode from Three Five Compounds Inc. (New York, NY) has a super-low profile (1.1 mm) and an overall dimension of 5 × 4 × 1.1 mm. It can accept a PIN photodiode chip with an active area up to 10 mm square. The device comes in three versions: standard clear encapsulation lens for responsivity from visible to 1000 nm; a red encapsulant lens for applications that are required to filter out visible ambient light interference; and a black encapsulant lens for application where higher responsivity in the infrared region is required.

Used for 3D non-contact surface profiling, the MicroMesure II system from Armstrong Optical Ltd. (Chelveston, Northants, UK) offers an optional ..mechanical turret system to make the changeover from one sensor to another simple and automatic. This allows for four sensors, two cameras, or complimentary third-party sensors to be utilized during a profiling run without user interaction. Optical encoders on the x- and y-scanning axes ensure higher positional accuracy during scanning and make scanning faster because data acquisition occurs during both directions of scanning, according to the company. SurfaceMap system control software has been upgraded to include a rapid prescan and automatic surface search functions.

New from Spectra-Physics (Mountain View, CA) is the DisQ-Mark Q-switched, thin-disk laser for marking and precision machining applications. This diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser generates up to eight watts of near-infrared output with beam quality of M2<4 and pulse repetition rates up to 50 kHz. Reportedly, the laser can create surface marks on many organic materials, including most plastics, as well as on a variety of metals, including aluminum and anodized aluminum. According to the company, thin-disk technology results in an air-cooled architecture that is simpler, easier to integrate, more power efficient, lower cost, and more rugged than conventional diode-pumped lasers.
