Domino celebrates 10,000th scribing laser

Cambridge, UK – Domino has celebrated the 10,000th sale from its scribing laser product range. The occasion was marked with a presentation to PT Frisian Flag Indonesia, a dairy producer and the purchaser of unit no. 10,000, at its Pasar Rebo plant in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Domino introduced dot matrix lasers to its portfolio of coding and marking technologies in 1994. Scribing laser – particularly appealing to users in industries such as food and healthcare due to its fast, high-performance method of coding with minimal consumables usage – joined the line-up in 2001. A decade on and 10,000 sales later, the range represents a significant proportion of Domino’s £300 million annual turnover.

PT Frisian Flag Indonesia, a dairy producer, purchased its first scribing laser in 2003. "We needed a reliable and high-quality coding system to apply two-line codes on pack formats, including printed cartons and printed and metallized aluminum foil sachets," said technical manager Iwan Perdana. "Having compared various systems on the market, we opted for Domino on the basis of outstanding product performance combined with great 24-hour local support."

Since that initial 25 W laser installation, PT Frisian Flag Indonesia now operates 55 Domino lasers on site, with a further six on order for installation in the coming months.

Products manufactured at the Jakarta site include powdered milk in cartons and sweetened condensed milk in foil sachets. The sachet lines run at up to 60 cycles/minute with 12 sachets produced per cycle. It is here that the 25 and 30 W lasers really come into their own, according to Perdana: “One of the key advantages of the Domino D-Series is that we can code across 12 lanes with a minimum number of lasers and then use a single controller for all heads."

This makes for a streamlined installation and fast and easy batch start-up. Adjustable focus enables the Domino lasers to be attuned to the substrate to ensure clear marking right across the foil web with no danger of perforation.
