Marshall Jones selected for Laser Innovation Award

East Hartford, Conn. – The SALA Awards Committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Marshall G. Jones (General Electric Global Research) will be presented with the 2011 CCAT Innovation Award for Laser Applications in Manufacturing Operations on April 13, 2011, at this year's Symposium for Advanced Laser Applications (SALA).

Click to EnlargeDr. Jones received his B.S. from the University of Michigan and M.S. and Ph.D. from University of Massachusetts, all in mechanical engineering. He worked for four years as development engineer at Brookhaven National Lab in the high energy physics department after his undergrad studies. As a principal engineer, he performed research and development work for all the industrial business segments of GE, where he has been addressing laser material processing, laser device development, and fiber optics which has afforded him 50 US patents, 31 foreign patents, and over 45 publications.

He has been an adjunct professor at SUNY of Albany and Schenectady County Community College and is a GE-GR Coolidge Fellow (GE’s highest technical honor). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and the Laser Institute of America (LIA).

He serves or has served on both community and national boards, including the Engineering Directorate for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and LIA. Dr. Jones received the General Electric Phillippe Award and the 2007 Arthur Schawlow Award, LIA’s highest achievement award. He continues to encourage youth to pursue the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields as demonstrated by the laser show that he gives around the nation. He has written a children’s book entitled "Never Give Up – the Marshall Jones Story."

The CCAT Innovation Award is given annually to an industrial laser advocate who has compiled a record of successes in introducing laser materials processing into a number of manufacturing operations, a record Dr. Jones established at General Electric. He was nominated for the Award by his peers in the industrial laser community in recognition of this work.

SALA will be held April 13 to 14, 2011 at the Hartford Hilton Hotel in Hartford, Conn. A limited number of seats are still available. Register now for this excellent symposium on end-user industrial laser applications.
