Julien Inc. purchases 5 axis laser/3D to develop high-end products

Julien Inc., Quebec, Canada, has purchased a state-of-the-art 5 axis laser/3D for three-dimensional cutting and welding for $1 million. European designed and until now mainly used in the automobile and aeronautics industries, this fast, highly sophisticated piece of equipment will make it possible for Julien, in conjunction with its Canadian and American industrial clients, to develop high-end products that previously were economically unfeasible.

Finding solutions, developing new products, and capturing new markets-these are the goals that have led Julien to attain this high level of development and innovation in stainless steel processing.

"Julien is constantly finding ways to innovate and renew itself. Each year, we invest an average of $2 million in updating our equipment stock," said Josee Fortin, VP, Industrial Division of Julien Inc.

The quality and precision of the 5 axis laser/3D make it possible to cut parts three-dimensionally. With a capacitive sensor to track the real-time position of parts automatically or in adaptive mode, this device can cut 3-D parts up to a height of 612mm (2 ft) and a length of 3650mm (11.5 ft). This equipment can cut various materials: stainless steels, steel, aluminium, titanium, up to a thickness of 4 mm (5/32 in).

To perfectly master it, two Julien managers carried out tests and verifications in Europe, and the supplier provided programming training at the company's head office. In addition, operators and technical support teams underwent further in-depth training onsite.

Demand for subcontracting, especially in the appliance sector, has allowed Julien to sign agreements on a regular basis with companies engaged in product development. Indeed, the acquisition of the 5 axis laser/3D has led to a major contract for Julien with Electrolux Major Appliances, headquartered in Augusta, GA.
