Environmental monitoring, 3D terrain mapping, and other airborne applications are getting a boost from a new compact, energy-efficient, and much more accurate single-photon LiDAR system that works even in challenging conditions.

A new system that brings together AI, machine vision, and lasers could aid the inspection of concrete structures (such as bridges and tunnels) by more accurately detecting and measuring cracks and other defects.

Researchers in New York are using laser-driven inertial confinement fusion, which generates large amounts of energy, to drive cleaner energy sources, including those in carbon-free power plants.
